Steven K. Sorensen - Personal Bio

Steve Sorensen, Owner/Managing Director of Strategy In Progress, LLC  has over 27 years consulting experience working with businesses and not-for-profit organizations of varying size and industries across a wide range of business functions and processes. For the last 15+ years, while working for McGladrey, a top 5 national accounting and business consulting firm, Steve has primarily worked with closely-held businesses and not-for-profit organizations helping them to develop an overall business strategy and strategic plan and then working with these organizations to implement a process to execute and adjust the plan, as needed.

Steve has facilitated numerous strategy development and planning processes for closely held owner managed Companies in a number of industries including manufacturing, distribution, construction, printing and information distribution, financial institutions, professional services, healthcare, gaming and entertainment, and transportation services.

In the Not-For-Profit arena, Sorensen has facilitated numerous strategic planning processes and Board/management retreats for social service agencies; economic and business advocacy organizations; health services organizations; and local governments and related amenities such as museums, cultural art organizations, etc.

In addition, Sorensen has also helped clients with organizational design and planning efforts to align organizations with their overall strategic direction and focus. Sorensen’s background and experience across multiple business functions provides to clients a unique blend of understanding integration of business processes and organizational structure to accomplish strategic objectives.

Outside McGladrey, Steve has other relevant experience including:

• Over three years serving as a controller for a mid-sized city government (pop. 30,000).

 • Over two years’ experience as a management information consultant with a then large international public accounting and consulting firm, working primarily with regulated utilities.

 • Three years in the mid-90’s with an information distribution and printing company. With this 250-employee company, Steve held positions as Chief Operating Officer and Vice-President of Systems and Administration, having responsibility for production and business systems and customer service.

Professional Affiliations

Steve has been awarded the Certificate in Management Accounting by the Institute of Management Accounting and has also been awarded the Certificate in Production and Inventory Management by the American Production and Inventory Control Society.

Education

Steve received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Iowa and a Master of Business Administration degree from the Babcock Graduate School of Management, Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Community Involvement

Steve has been actively involved with a number of civic, business, and service organizations in past years and has been past Chairman of the following: Bettendorf Optimist, Bettendorf Chamber of Commerce, Bettendorf/Pleasant Valley Business Education Partnership, and Institute of Management Accountants. Steve currently serves on the Boards of the Junior Achievement of the Heartland, Bettendorf Development Corporation, New Ventures Center of the Iowa Quad Cities Chamber, and the Bettendorf/Pleasant Valley Business Education Partnership.
